Even though the sample size in this study with n = 15 was quite
small, similar results were obtained in a course in Web engineering
with a sample size of n = 131, split in groups of 30 students and all
groups following the same course design. In particular, we found
that instructors who were perceived to be high in levels of
person-centered attitudes and subject-specific competences were
capable of increasing student’s motivation. In contrast, instructors
who were perceived to be low or just average in holding personcentered
attitudes appeared even to contribute to a decrease in
students’ motivation regarding the course style. It is remarkable
that these changes in motivation are brought about in courses with
just 2 h per week over the period of one semester. A further consequence
of our research is almost astonishing in how precisely it
supports person-centered theory: The increase in motivation goes
