The conception of bodhicitta in Mahayana and in Vajrayana is not uniform. The term had one simple meaning in the Mahayana texts and its meaning became complex in Vajrayana texts. What was a mental stage of a bodhisattva’s career in Mahayana, became the goal of striving and the final stage of spiritual life in Vajrayana. The term ‘non-attachment’ ( Mushoju ) in the Vajracchedika-sutra was explained away as a positive concept in Chinese and Japanese Vajrayana.
