The effect of Extrinsic Motivators on Intrinsic Motivation
Question: Do extrinsic rewards undermine intrinsic motivation?
- Research shows that being rewarded for working on an intrinsically interesting activity can decrease a person’s intrinsic motivation for the activity. However, motivation is not a balck and white issue. There are many factors to consider and what work for one athlete might not work for another. In general, positive-intrinsic motivation tends to be the most appropriate for long-term, sustainable motivation. Positive extrinsic motivation (rewards, acknowledgement, etc.)
