DataData from several government sources were collected for the years 2006-2011. Annual data measuring state-specified seatbelt usage and the existence of a primary seatbelt law for each state were drawn from the US Department of Transportation. The behavioral risk factor surveillance system (BRFSS)reports annual obesity rate estimates for all 50 states and the District of Columbia across 2006-2010 and 2011.Following the world Health Organization classifications, an adult’s body mass index can classify them as underweight (<18.5 kg/m), normal weight (18.5-25 kg/m ), overweight(25-30 kg/m), obese(30-40 kg/m)or extremely obese (≥40 kg/m), where body mass index is computed by dividing a person’s weight (in kg) by the square of their height (in metres). Data state were captured by dividing the annual total vehicle miles travelled by the number of residents in each state. The number of residents is chosen instead of the number of licensed drivers as seatbelt usage rates are reported for the passengers of the car rather than the driver. State-specified annual urban and rural vehicle miles travelled data were collected from the federal Highway Administration, while annual data for who are women were gathered from the Federal Highway Administration. State-specified per capita personal income was gathered from the US Department of Commerce.
