3.2. Changes in carbohydrates in tepals and other floral organs
Soluble sucrose in tepals of the small flower buds (1.5 g)
decreased from 1.99 mg/g fw at harvest to 0.08 mg/g fw at day 5.
However, there was no difference in sucrose content in large buds
(3.9 g)(Table 2). In the anthers of small flower buds, sucrose content
was high at both day 0 and 5, 7.70 and 9.74 mg/g fw, respectively.
In large flower buds, sucrose in anthers was 7.59 mg/g fw at day 0,
but no sucrose was detected at day 5. Fructose and glucose content
at day 5 in the anthers of the small buds was 0.39 and 0.53 mg/g fw,
respectively, which was lower than 2.99 and 3.06 mg/g fw at day
0, and sucrose was not detected at day 5. However, fructose and
glucose content (17.41 mg/g fw and 16.15 mg/g fw, respectively) in
the filaments of the small buds at day 5 was significantly higher
than at day 0 (4.06 mg/g fw and 6.55 mg/g fw). In the pistil of small
buds, fructose and glucose levels increased at day 5 and sucrose
levels decreased as compared to those at day 0.
