Now, he may decide not to examine this troublesome feeling he may refuse to allow it to become clearly defined in consciousness. (perhaps this incident at the party occurs on a day when number of unpleasant things have happened to him and he does not want to think about any of them.) as a result the feeling that something unpleasant has happened may slip to an unconscious level, along with the undefined memories and anger it represents. Repression has occurred. If , on the other hand, he does allow his memory of this incident and the associated humiliation and anger clear recognition in consciousness but makes a decision not to dwell on them, he is then engaging in suppression. this is a process entirely different from repression, which occurs unconsciously.
