This viewpoint reflects the essence of a 1989 Supreme Court decision confirming the right of schools to exercise ultimate editorial judgement over the content school publications. In reality, adults have always exercised review and restraint our youth. the issue, it is argued, is not whether restraint should be exercised, but what age this authority should be relinquished. Age distinctions and age-specific requirements are an essential part of our legal system in teh forms of ordinances, statutes, and the U.S. Constitution. Thus, design of developmental processes whereby determination of the manner in which intellectual independence is established is one of the staff's most challenging professional responsibilities and opportunities.
