Participants included the elementary school principal, 5 EHS teachers, 2 WSU faculty members, the public health nurse (PHN) assigned to EHS, the public health director who works with the schools, the 2 study co-principal investigators from MC, and the study coordinator. There was consensus about the value of the program both to help children with healthy habits and to have children connected with community agencies such as the Mayo Clinic. The program was viewed as forward thinking, organized and flexible. Challenges were losing the pedometers, connecting with parents, English as a second language, unclear expectations of parents, and inconvenience issues for parents. The student nurses were perceived as positive and flexible. The 5-2-1-0 curriculum was evaluated positively with many suggestions for strengthening introducing and teaching each component. For example, bringing in fresh fruits and veggies and comparing nutritious items with junk food, as well as working on a food budget and use of coupons. Promoting physical activity as a family was highlighted and possibly building on the existing after school program. The program was viewed as fitting well with the academic goals for the children. It was noted that
the mission is to educate the total child and that children need to be physically healthy to be mentally healthy. Citizenship was also mentioned as a secondary outcome, by showing involvement with community agencies.
