previous study, we found that the plasma cortisol levels were significantly
elevated by an acute salinity (24 h) and chronic salinity
(30 days) stress when Mozambique tilapia were transferred from
FW to SW (34 ppt) [4]. According to Kameerer et al. [20], the plasma
cortisol level was significantly increased at 3 h, remained elevated
for 3 days and then returned to the basal level during the
SW transfer. In agreement with these findings, the plasma cortisol
levels were significantly elevated at day 1 in the SW fish in the
present study, whereas no significant difference was found at day
4 of the salinity stress.
