3.1 million tourists spent their holiday at the coast and on
the islands of Schleswig-Holstein in 2003. 10% of these tourists
were from abroad. As a destination for German tourists,
Schleswig-Holstein has a market share equivalent to that of
France or Greece (NIT, 2001). In terms of its market share of
tourism within Germany, Schleswig-Holstein has a market
share of approximately 4%. Tourism is important economically
for the state: 7% of all jobs are in the tourism sector and 4.6% of
the state income comes from tourism.
