Recently, natural plant products have been known for their medicinal and antimicrobial
properties. Garlic, galanga rhizome, betel vine, Sapindus sp., Rhinacanthus nasutus Linn.,and K.
galanga Linn. had an antifungal activity against dermatophytes in human and veterinary medicine
(George and Pandalai, 1949; Trakranrungsie et al., 2004; Wuthi-udomlert et al., 2000). In addition,
herbal products such as D-limonene, neem seed extract, tea tree oil, eugenol, hinokitiol, citral and
allyl-isothiocyanate have an antifungal activity against fish water mold, e.g. Saprolegnia,
Aphanomyces and Achlya (Campbell et al., 2001; Hussein et al., 2000; Mori et al., 2002). For this
reason, an attention has been diverted to an alternative, safe and cheap method for the management
of fish water mold. Thus, the fungistatic and fungicidal activities of crude extract of galanga rhizome,
betel vine leaves, R. nasutus Linn. leaves, K. galanga Linn. leaves and roots against water mold, S.
parasitica H2, were studied.
