tuberculosis; Strain H37Ra and Mycobacterium smegmatis were
obtained from the American Type Culture Collection (Manassas,VA 20,108, USA). They were maintained on Lowenstein-Jensen (LJ)slopes and cultured on Middlebrook 7H9 broth (Difco, Detroit,Mich.) supplemented with 0.2% (vol/vol) glycerol (Sigma Chemical Co., Saint Louis, Mo.), 1.0 g of casitone (Difco) per liter, 10% (vol/vol)OADC (oleic acid, albumin, dextrose, catalase; Difco) and 0.05%(vol/vol) Tween 80 (Sigma). The complete medium was referred to as 7H9GC-Tween. Cultures were grown aerobically on 7H9GCTween at 37 °C.
