For now, schizophrenia with comorbid conditions needs to be looked at both from a categorical and from a dimensional perspective. The debates over the validity of the DSM-5 categories and the call to complement them with a dimensional approach, such as the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC)31 are not new. The publication of the DSM-5 in 2013 is a welcome development. It offers the best way of describing psychiatric disorders and like the DSM-IV, it allows room for flexible thinking, including recognition of comorbid conditions in clinical practice.
