There was a time when the monks in Khositaram temple in Kosambi were quarreling and behaving stubbornly. The Buddha got tired of this behavior and retreated to the forest near the village of Parileyyaka, where the elephant and the monkey served as his laymen. At the end of Buddhist Lent, the Ven. Ananda and a delegation of monks went to the Buddha to ask him to return to Jetavan Maha Vihara. After the Buddha left the ofrest, the elephant was so sad that he fell down and died. The quarrelsome monks learned that the Buddha had returned, and approached him to repent.
