5.1.1 In contrast to Asia as a whole, in Southeast Asia there is no notable shift of conflicts
into the area of identity conflicts visible.
Unlike Asia as a whole, the gap in Southeast Asia between cultural and non-cultural conflicts is not
widening – rather both individual trends are running along a similar course (see chart 9). Only in
the period from the mid-1960s and mid-1980s is the observed deviation a little larger. During that
time (which was not typical for Asia as a whole) not cultural but conflicts caused by secular ideologies
predominated, i.e., primarily regime conflicts. Ultimately, this trend reversed as of the
beginning of the new century
