I know children who were born in the U.S. but are living far away from their families. People take advantage of these children, and I know many who have been who were tricked into doing things that are very harmful to them. For the purpose of the law, a child is anyone under age 18, and the slavery we are discussing is the modern-day variety known as human trafficking. Child trafficking does not have to involve the movement of a person across a state or national border, but it does pertain to the exploitation of an individual’s labor for another’s financial gain. Trafficking can involve the transporting or recruiting of persons by means of threat, force, or other forms of coercion. Children are especially prone to being trafficked because of the vulnerability that comes with young age.
