strength = 30 or 120 MPa and confining stiffness = 500 or
2000 MPa (see the curves marked with hollow symbols). From
these curves, it can be seen that the discrepancy between the predicted
lateral strains by different models can be as large as 200%
(see the difference between Chun and Park’s model and Moran
and Pantelides’ model in Fig. 3). Such large discrepancy may be
attributed partly to the different sets of test results used to derive
the different models and partly to the different formulations of
the models.
The above observed discrepancy suggests that further research
adopting a more rigorous approach and using a wider range of test
results is needed to develop a more generally applicable
