Conversation 1
Male 1 Have you heard the news about John?
Male 2 No, I haven’t heard any news.
Male 1 I talked to his flatmate yesterday, and she told me he'd decided to leave university.
Male 2 Really? But why would he do that? He's nearly finished!
Male 1 I'm not sure. His flatmate thought maybe he'd got a really good job in London. She told me he spent a couple of days in London last week, but he wouldn't tell her why.
Male 2 Well, he is pretty amazing with computers. Maybe he just thinks it's a waste of time to finish his degree – if he can start earning a lot of money now.
Male 1 I don't know. He's put so much work into his course; I think he should just finish. I'm sure he could find a good job later.
Male 2 Yeah, I think that would be the best thing to do.
Conversation 2
Female Have you heard the news about David and Lucy?
Male No, I haven't heard anything. Is it something interesting?
Female Well, yes - they're moving up to Birmingham next month.
Male Really? That's a surprise. They haven’t been here very long.. Why are they leaving?
Female Lucy told me David was moving to his company's main office. I suppose it's a big promotion for him, and they're pretty excited about moving.
Male What's Lucy going to do, though? It won't be easy for her to find work up there, will it?
Female She told me she was thinking about starting her own business. Her hobby is making jewellery, and she’d like to try and make some money from it.
Male Well, that's good news for them. I'll be sorry to see them go, though. They've been great neighbours.
Conversation 3
Female 1 Hi, Katie. How are things?
Female 2 Oh, hi, Sue. Fine, thanks. But I’ve just heard some sad news.
Female 1 What's happened?
Female 2 Well, someone just told me that Scott and Kirsten are breaking up.
Female 1 No! I don't believe it! Who told you that?
Female 2 I bumped into Scott's friend, Carl, and he told me. Why would he say that if it wasn't true?
Female 1 I have no idea, but it just can't be true. I was at Scott and Kirsten's place just the other evening and everything seemed fine. Actually, Kirsten told me they'd decided on a wedding date and that everything was going great.
Female 2 Well, maybe that's it.
Female 1 What do you mean?
Female 2 You know what happens when couples start planning a wedding. Things can get very tense.
Female 1 I guess that's true. Anyway, they really care about each other – I'm sure they'll be fine.
Conversation 4
Male 1 Have you heard about the company director?
Male 2 No. What happened?
Male 1 He crashed his car into a bus! And then he tried to drive away instead of waiting for the police.
Male 2 Really? That's very strange.
Male 1 I know. His office is saying he had some kind of medical problem. Actually, he's in hospital now, so that's probably true.
Male 2 Well, I hope he's OK. I think he's the best director we've had in a long time.
