Leakey continued to mention the need for an extensive field study of chimpanzees. Jane required no encouragement, for she wanted desperately to undertake a study of this nature. One day, she went into Leakey's office and "blurted out:
"Louis, I wish you wouldn't keep talking about it [the field study] because that's just what I want to do." "Jane," he replied..., "I've been waiting for you to tell me that. Why on earth did you think I talked about those chimpanzees to you?"9
