The Apollo group's reputation was sullied in 2005 with the release of a U.S.Education Dept. Report depicting a high-pressure sales culture at the UOP that resembled a telemarketing bolier room more than a university admission office. "Phienix recruiters soon find out that UOP bases their salaries soley on the number of student they recruit," the report charged. That's prohibited by federal law. One recruiter who started at$28,000,for instance, was bumped to $85,000 after recruiting 151 student in six month. But another who started at$28,000 got just a $4,000 raise after signing up 79 student. Websites like www.uopsucks.com have emerged as blog-like forums for former student and employess unhappy with or distrustful of the UOP's offerings.
