The study of the first year undergraduate students’ responses, at SIIT, Thammasat
University, is expected to provide important information in determining the extent and type
of their motivation i.e. integrative or instrumental. The significance of this study should be
that the responses lead to a better knowledge of their motivation. The findings could help the
institute work toward an improvement of their motivations and, alongside, enhancing their
language learning achievement at the very earliest stage of their enrollment in the first year.
