Gender is another possible factor in stroke care. A study by Engelstein et al. (2000) found that men were evaluated and taken to CT scan more quickly than were women. Kapral et al. (2006) surveyed men and woman regarding hypothetical stroke scenarios and found that woman were less likely to accept tPA and wanted more information to guide their decision. Erikson, Glader, Norrving, Terent and Stegmayr (2009) reported gender differences in stroke care and outcomes but found that these differences were explained primarily by the woman’s higher age and lower level of consciousness on admission. More research is necessary to evaluate these issues.
