Devil’s corkscrews
Palaeocastor is most famous for making long spiral burrows that were found in Nebraska, USA. These spirals, known as “Daermonelix”, are shaped like corkscrews and went as deep as 3m. below the surface. At first they were a mystery, until a specimen of Palaeocastor was found at the bottom of one of them. The scratch marks along the sides, long-attributed to the claws of a burrower, were actually cut by the chisel-like front teeth of the beaver as it dug with its mouth.
