About the Course
The Bachelor of Pharmacy is a professional degree designed to meet the demands for pharmacy services in Australia with an additional focus on health practice in challenging environments, including rural and remote, to meet the unique and diverse needs of communities in Australia. Pharmacists are knowledgeable about the chemical, physical, and biological properties of medicines; how medications work, their usage and their clinical effects. Pharmacists provide information, advice, and education on medicines and health issues enabling patients to achieve optimal health outcomes. Pharmacists are also involved in advising medical practitioners and other health-care professionals on the interactions and side effects of medications, medication selection and dosage, and a range of other issues.
Graduates will have a comprehensive understanding and knowledge of the basic sciences plus: pharmaceutics, pharmaco-therapeutics and pharmacy practice; decision-making skills to identify and manage complex therapeutic problems within a multi-disciplinary health-care team; the ability to develop an individual health-care plan for patients with complex conditions, focusing on self-management; effective communication skills for professional pharmacy practice, enabling essential information transfer between pharmacists and their patients, and their colleagues, and other health-care professionals, to achieve positive health outcomes for individuals and communities; and an ability to practice effectively, efficiently, ethically, and at 'best practice' standards. In addition graduates from this program receive a nationally recognised Mental Health First Aid Australia certificate, and (in anticipation of expected changes in Australian regulations) are trained in administration of injections and vaccination.
In addition to completing your application through SATAC, if you wish to strengthen your application, you are encouraged to demonstrate your commitment to a career in pharmacy by submitting an optional supporting statement.
