There are many country differences in the characteristics of organic labels. Origin, placement of national and the European labels, and horizontal position of national labels, all differ across countries. All counties, except Sweden, have on their organic products the national label as most distinctive. Only Swedish products have as often national labels as they have the European one. Similarly, national organic labels are put most regularly on the front of the package in all countries, except in Austria. There, national labels are most often on the back or sides. The horizontal position of national labels on the front of the package is another characteristic that differs throughout countries. The distinct position of the label was on the right only on Swedish products, while everywhere else it was on the left. Another characteristic of organic labels, displaying country divergence, is placement of the European label. Austrian and Swiss products have this label mostly on the back or sides of the package. In contrast, Danish products have it on the front of their packages, while in Sweden the label is equally placed on both positions. All these dissimilarities imply that in each country there are different guiding principles that determine how and which organic labels are used.
