As I nostalgically look back at the year 2014, I see that I have had the privilege to meet hundreds of librarians in Europe and Latin America, and have frequently engaged in conversations concerning “next-gen” integrated library systems (ILS). The concept of next-gen is always interesting in that the definition is ambiguous and very much dependent on the goals of individual institutions. Yet, in general terms, it is evident that in order to be next-gen the solution should focus on needs beyond those of the library administrators. And, in fact, discussions continually shift from talking about the next-gen back-end products, that tend to compromise front-end (user) experience, to the importance of finding next-gen best-in-breed solutions that enhance library usage and research.
Traditionally, the ILS has played an important role in both the management and accessibility of library resources, based predominantly on the need to catalog, acquire and circulate print items. Yet in the course of time, as we all know, the focus has moved increasingly towards digital items. Moreover, with the emergence of the web and the growth of e-commerce, end-user expectations have shifted. Now we, as end-users, expect (demand) an experience on the library’s website to be as agreeable as (probably better than) we would have elsewhere. We expect to find relevant information easily. It’s really that simple, and really that which should direct us all.
Certainly, as a software vendor, creating that seamless end-user experience is complex, requiring a lot of dedicated time and resources to achieve the best possible user experience. For example, take a typical query made in a discovery tool. This query would run against hundreds of millions of records contained in tens of thousands of subscription data sources. To deliver the most relevant and current results, the search algorithm needs to make sense out of this. And then, beyond the mechanics of search, we must also look at the user interface. How are results presented? What appropriate content sources exist? How are facets made available? How easy is it to get to the full text? To ensure we align the critical user experience with the best-in-breed solution we must also know our users’ behaviors and provide sufficient customization to meet the needs of our different constituents.
All this leads to a premise: The front-end discovery service is the gateway to the library’s resources where the user experience (read: retention) is judged effective or not. So, the question of addressing the concept of next-gen means looking at, and collaborating with, end-users and asking: does the discovery service meet the needs of the end-user and, by extension, the library?
There is much to be gained or lost with a discovery service. Choosing the best-in-breed solution is where interoperability comes into play. Open systems mean choice. When an ILS is open via APIs, libraries can evaluate the front-end discovery service separately and assess the solution that truly meets their users’ needs. When we shift the evaluation method to the mission-critical front-end, to the service that meets the needs of users we must evaluate the ILS and ask: is it truly open? Next-gen has to then be defined with openness on the back-end, so that the best possible experience can be gained on the front-end
