Normally a woman does not notice anything after taking the first pill, the mifepristone. Some women can experience some nausea, dizziness, or begin to bleed slightly. The bleeding generally begins 1-4 hours after taking the first dose of misoprostol. You may experience pain, cramping, bleeding that is heavier than a menstruation, with blood clots, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. The longer the length of the pregnancy, the stronger the cramps and bleeding will be. If the abortion is complete, the bleeding and cramping will diminish. The exact moment of the abortion can be identified by a peak in the cramping and bleeding.Normally a woman can continue bleeding lightly for 1-3 weeks after an abortion, but this can vary widely. The menstrual period should return 4-6 weeks later. During and after the abortion, the woman should use sanitary pads, NOT tampons.
