2. Experimental methods
2.1. Sampling site: Sorsogon Bay, Sorsogon, Philippines
Sorsogon Bay (Fig. 1) is one of the significant fishing areas in the
Philippines, being a source of aquatic products with commercial
value that interest both local and international markets (Montojo
et al., 2012). It is located in the province of Sorsogon in the Bicol Region
of Luzon Island. It opens to the west into the Ticao Pass. Apart
from the narrow channel and areas off Castilla in the north and
Sablayan Island to the south, the water depth is generally less than
five meters. Along the narrow channel near the opening the water
is deeper (more than ten meters). The water surface area is estimated
at approximately 20,000 hectares. Generally, the substrata
of the bay are either muddy, or sandy, or a combination of these
two types. Near the channel mouth, the water is generally clear
but within the bay area, underwater visibility is up to 30–100 cm
only (Olaño et al., n.d.).
