Beryx superbus, like Hoplopteryx (see left). was
a Late Cretaceous member of the Bervciforrnes
group. Its genusis'still re'prese;ted by two
species-found almost worldwide today.-';the
comtDop alfonsino (B. qecadactylusf and
the splendid alfonsino (8. splendensJ.; Beryx
are relatively large fish, up to 70cm/27~in in
length, and feed onsmall fish, cephalopods
and crustaceans on the coastal sea floor,
