Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is defi ned as a narrowing
of the central vertebral canal in one or more lumbar
vertebrae. It is most commonly caused by degenerative
arthritis of the spine, spondylosis, and is a signifi cant cause of
disability in the elderly population. 1 – 3 In fact, stenosis is the
most common indication for spine surgery in patients older
than 65 and its prevalence is expected to rise 59% to 64 million
elderly adults by the year 2025
