culture was performed in 61 (23%) subjects, including 25% and 9% of the PJI and AF
subjects, respectively (P = 0.3).
The microbiologic data are shown in Table 3. One hundred forty-three (80%) of PJIs
were monomicrobial; 18 (10%) were polymicrobial and in 17 (10%), a microorganism
was isolated from a single periprosthetic tissue or fluid specimen (indeterminate result).
There were 770 organisms isolated (median, 3/subject; range, 1–19/subject) with 662 isolates
from PJI subjects and 108 from AF subjects. Among the PJI subjects, 587 isolates from
161 subjects were classified as “pathogens” and 75 isolates as “indeterminate”.
