THE DETERMINATION OF THE PROPENSITY OF A READY-TO-USE OIL-BORNE/OIL
TYPE WOOD PRESERVATIVE TREATING SOLUTION TO FORM STABLE EMULSIONS
Jurisdiction: AWPA Technical Committee P-5
Adopted in 2004, reaffirmed in 2012.
This AWPA Standard is promulgated according to an open, consensus procedure. Using this standard in no way signifies standardization of a
chemical or wood protection system in AWPA Standard U1.
1. Scope:
1.1 This method is intended for the determination of the
propensity of a ready to use oil-borne/oil type wood
preservative treating solution to form stable emulsions. This
method is used as a guide to plant operators in selecting
treating solutions and is not intended to be a complete
conformance test.
2. Summary:
2.1 This test method uses a commercially viable use
concentration of a ready to use (RTU) wood preservative
and evaluates its propensity to form a stable emulsion, which
may interfere with common treatment practices and
influence final treated wood commodity performance. A
more severe test method is also described and is
recommended where steaming and/or boultonization is to
take place in the same common cylinder used for
conditioning and treating. A 50 mL sample and 50 mL of
distilled water or wood extractive water both at 71C
(160°F) are shaken vigorously in a graduated cylinder. The
separation of the cuff into distinct water phase, emulsion,
and oil phase is measured in mL at 5, 15, and 30-minute
intervals.
3. Safety Precautions:
3.1 Use and follow all recommendations as stated on the
U.S. EPA Registered Pesticide Label for pesticide
containing products. Follow and use all recommended
language on commercial material safety data sheets
(MSDS's) when they are available for the solvents or the
treating solution concentrates and ready to use treating
solutions. Practice good hygiene guidelines when exposed to
common chemical laboratory environments. Be careful of
warm or hot solutions. Other hazards may be present.
4. Apparatus/Reagents:
4.1 Analytical balance capable of weighing samples to the
nearest 0.1 mg. Weighing paper Or Weighing Vials/Boats
4.2 Alternatively, Top Loading balance that will weigh
samples to the nearest 0.1 g. Weighing paper Or Weighing
Vials/Boats
4.3 Class A volumetric flask, 1000-mL.
4.4 Separatory funnels, 125-mL
4.5 Beakers: 50-mL, 100-mL, 250-mL, 2 L
4.6 Stoppered Graduated cylinders: 100-mL.
4.7 Small Glass funnel, about 50-70mm diameter.
4.8 Small Büchner funnel, about 50-70mm diameter.
4.9 Whatman #4 fast filter paper to fit funnel.
4.10 Magnetic stir bars: ~3/16" diameter x 7/8"
4.11 Magnetic stirrer (for extractions, ambient temperature).
4.12 Magnetic stirrer hotplate, capable of maintaining a
temperature around -65-75 º C.
4.13 Thermometer in the range of 20 - 100 C.
4.14 Hotplate for boiling water.
4.15 Timer/stopwatch.
4.16 Fresh Sapwood of the desired species.
5. Procedure:
5.1 General Method Procedures.
5.1.1 In separate beakers, heat the ready to use preservative
solution to be evaluated solution and the distilled water to
160-170F (65-75C). The RTU solution is the solution in
question, containing the concentration of biocide (from dry
chemical or from solution concentrates) in use and the
concentration of auxiliary solvent, if any, in use.
5.1.2 Quickly pour RTU solution into 100 mL stoppered
graduated cylinder up to the 50 mL mark.
5.1.3 Quickly pour distilled water on top of the RTU
solution up to the 100 mL mark.
5.1.4 Stopper cylinder and shake vigorously ten times using
up and down motions.
5.1.5 Quickly set cylinder down, vent, and start timer.
5.1.6 Record separation at intervals of 5 minutes, 15
minutes, and 30 minutes as follows:
Emulsion
Water, mL Cuff, mL Oil, mL
5 minutes
15 minutes
30 minutes
Notes:
The Emulsion Cuff is the intermediate layer, which is found
between the oil and water layers after shaking. In recording
the separation, note whether the water layer contains oil
droplets and whether the oil layer contains water droplets. In
both cases these usually adhere to the sides of the cylinder.
Also note whether oil and water layers are clear or turbid.
Note whether the emulsion of "cuff" layer is tight or loose or
lacy at each time interval. This refers to the size of the
bubbles in the "cuff."
The best results are those in which there is a minimum of
"cuff" and a maximum of clean, non-hazy, oil and water

separation in the least time. Extreme care should be
employed in the treating plant and precautions taken if the
amount of emulsion cuff exceeds 10 mL at the end of the 30
minute cycle. Precautions may include, but are not limited
to, ceasing to use the RTU in question, contacting alternate
material suppliers, etc.
5.2 Preservative Specific Procedures.
For a more severe test procedure and one that will ultimately
provide the user with a more beneficial screening
mechanism, substitute the tap water in the above procedure
with a wood substrate/extractives water made by preparing
wood test water as follows: Into 1000 mL of tap water,
disperse 100 grams of freshly prepared wood shavings made
by grinding sapwood of the desired wood species into a
rough ground particle size (~ 10 mesh) and boil the wood/
water mixture for 1 hour. Filter the wood shavings from the
water and allow to cool. Preserve the water in a glass
container sealed from air contamination with a tightly fitting
non-metal lid. Wood infused water should be used within 48
hours to prevent contamination or possible fermentation.
When testing the RTU solution, use the exact treating
solutions strengths that will yield the desired retention under
typical operating conditions of the plant using commercially
available Rueping or Lowry treating cycles.
6. Calculations:
Measure the amount of emulsion, water phase, and oil phase
in mL. Multiply the value in mL times two to arrive at the
relative percentages of each fraction in the final test.
7. Significance of Test:
This method covers the measurement of the ability of
petroleum oils plus biocide or a mixture of petroleum oils
and auxiliary solvents plus the biocide to separate from the
water phase of plant cylinder and work tank drainings and/or
effluent. This method is used as a guide to plant operators in
selecting treating oils, RTU-treating solutions, and mixtures
of biocide concentrates plus petroleum oils and is not
intended to be a conformance test. This test is a very
preliminary screening test that allows the treating plant
operator to determine if a specific RTU treating solution
may cause emulsion problems in the treating plant.
Generally, the greater the separation, the less likelihood of
emulsion problems occurring. Emulsion problems
(formation of a oil-water or water -in-oil emulsion when one
is not intended) have been known to cause problems in the
past including poor retentions, non-uniform penetration,
reduced product performance and early product failure.

STANDARD FOR DETERMINATION OF QUATERNARY AMMONIUM
COMPOUNDS IN WOOD BY POTENTIOMETRIC BACK-TITRATION
USING SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE AND HYAMINE 1622
Jurisdiction: AWPA Technical Committee P-5
Initially adopted in 2004, revised in 2008, and reaffirmed in 2014.
This AWPA Standard is promulgated according to an open, consensus procedure. Using this standard in no way signifies standardization of a
chemical or wood protection system in AWPA Standard U1.
1. Scope:
1.1 This method is an analogue to AWPA Method A18,
however, use of chloroform as a titration reagent has been
eliminated and visual determination of a color endpoint has
been replaced with a potentiometric endpoint using an
automatic titrator. This method can be used to determine
concentrations of quaternary ammonium compounds (quats)
in wood. It is intended for routine quality control in wood
treating and is not suitable for trace levels of quats in wood.
1.2 All cationic species that form sparingly soluble
compounds with sodium lauryl sulfate can be determined
quantitatively and therefore can also potentially interfere
with the determination of quats. This method is not
compound specific, the total equivalence of cationic
compounds is determined. The molecular weight of the quat
being studied must be known for accurate results. Quat
compounds to which this method has been validated include
alkyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride (ADBAC) and
didecyldimethylammonium chloride (DDAC) and DDAC
equivalents.
2. Summary of Method:
2.1 Wood samples are ground to sawdust and quaternary
ammonium compounds are extracted into a hydrochloric
acid/ethanol solution with the aid of an ultrasonic bath. An
aliquot of extraction solution is diluted with water and an
excess amount of sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is added in
order to react with the quats. The SLS remaining in the
extraction solution is then titrated potentiometrically with a
standard solution o
