Using a proactive approach
When compared with counseling children or adults, counselling young people needs to be more flexible and freer in structure. the counselling process will generally not be as well defined and predictable. Young people are less likely to stay engaged in a counselling process which follows sequentially through the stage of therapy over time. They may have difficulty in articulating their difficulties and may only be able to focus on, and describe, discrete parts of their world which tend to be disconnected from the broader picture. The counselling process therefore needs to take account of this, with counsellors using strategies which will enable young people to draw their ideas and beliefs together to form constructs which will help them to make sense of their world.
