Statistical Analyses
All statistical analyses were performed using SAS (version 9.1, 2006, SAS
Institute, Cary, NC). Means and frequencies were calculated by gender.
Student’s t-tests for continuous variables and chi-square analyses for categorical
variables were calculated to examine differences in select characteristics
by gender and by functional ability.
Individuals were grouped into two age categories; younger than 75 and
75 years or older; race-ethnicity was categorized into three groups
(Non-Hispanic Whites, Non-Hispanic Blacks, and Hispanics). Two individuals
of American Indian=Alaska Native heritage were combined with the
Non-Hispanic Black group. Educational attainment was grouped into less
than 12th grade versus 12th grade education or more; annual income was
grouped into those making less than $20,000 versus more; living arrangement
was grouped as living alone versus living with a spouse or others.
