People produce huge quantities of waste. Containers such as bottles and cans, which once filled dustbins, can now be recycled via bottle and can banks in many areas. Much of our waste is buried and the sites then used for construction. Other waste is burned in incinerators, usually in large cities. the by-products of many industries can be very poisonous and, in recent years, strict controls have been introduced to prevent companies releasing waste into rivers, the sea, or the atmosphere without treating it first. The NUCLEAR WASTE from nuclear power stations produces separate problems.
