In the fifth century A.D., Germanic peoples from northwest Europe settled in parts of lowland Britain, which had been a province of the Roman Empire. These peoples are now known as the Anglo-Saxons. Both men and women of the Anglo-Saxons wore jewelry to display their status, region, and ethnic identity. Anglo-Saxon metalworkers utilized interlaced forms to make brooches, pendants, and buckles, and a substantial amount of their jewelry has been found in graves.
