The maintenance of good skin in newborns is important to enable the skin
to protect the body from infection and other toxins. This article examines
the evidence around the products and information which are available to
parents and health professionals in order to provide optimum care for
infants. The lack of research to guide policies and protocols for care of the
skin hinders the provision of evidence-based care (Steen, 2008). Parents
need to be informed about how to cleanse their infant’s skin, and how to
prevent and treat nappy rash and other common skin problems in newborns.
