The chemical cleaning of RO and NF membranes fouled licorice
aqueous solution was investigated. Various chemicals and combinations
of the chemical agents to enhance FR and RR of the RO and NF
fouled membranes were employed. The results show that cleaning
efficiency is increased with elevating cleaning agent concentration. As
expected (according to the organic nature feed) acids and ethylene
diamine tetra acetic aid (EDTA) showed low cleaning efficiency while
for both membranes combination of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS)
as a surfactant, ethylene diamine tetra acetic aid (EDTA) as a chelating
agent and NaOH showed good cleaning results. Operating conditions
i.e., cleaning time, temperature and pH have a vital role in cleaning
