Simply stated, electroconvulsive (ECT) is a procedure that produces a deliberate, artificially induced grand mal seizure of the brain. The primary indication for the use of ECT is major depressive disorder. The procedure is administered to produce a profound antidepressant therapeutic effect. For nurses, as well as other medically trained personnel, this concept is difficult to assimilate, because our orientation and training has taught us to prevent or control seizures in patients.
