Three hundred participants consented to participate in this study. Nine were excluded because of either a change in stroke status or protocol clarification, leaving 291subjects. The sample included 150 men (51.5%) and 141 women (48.5%). The average age was 63 years old ( = 56.5, standard deviation =16.6) with the youngest being 24 years old and the oldest 89. There were 180 whites (61.8%) and 111 blacks (38.1%); all but 1 was non-Hispanic/Latino. BMI was = 28.3 ± 17.9 kg/m2. Neck circumference was = 15.5 ± 3.24 inches. Thirty-five patients (12%) had TIAs, and the other 256 (88%) had strokes. Table 1 provides information on demographics.
