In Western Europe, weed management on conventional farms is primarily accomplished through the use of herbicides. This has been very effective for weed control in major crops, greatly reducing yield losses and stabilizing potential weed infestations at low and constant levels. Herbicides have therefore facilitated the simplification of cropping systems, the expansion of monocultures and the adoption of reduced tillage systems (Buhler et al., 2000).
