radiation
Abstract
In this chapter, the concepts of radiation that are relevant to construction are discussed. First, the difference between ionising radiation and common forms of electromagnetic radiation is explained, and then, the different types of ionising radiation, including α, β, γ, and neutrons are described. Sources of radiation are then described, and the type of radiation that may be expected from them. Half-lives are explained. The effect of radiation on humans and the definition of the Sievert are also explained. The most important function of construction materials for radiation is shielding. The equation for this is discussed in this chapter.
