A die that is not relieved on the outboard side of the extruder will generally produce an end product with a smooth regular surface in the form of a bead, chunk, wafer, flake, or doughnut. A die that is relieved on the outboard side of the extruder, in one or more steps, will often product a rough textured final product with irregular surface conditions. Such rough surfaced products will absorb moisture more readily than smooth surfaced extrusions and will, therefore, be used where quick absorption of water is desired as in the case of some dry expanded dog foods.
