Russia were favourites to win the final after defeating defending champions Spain in the semi-final, commentators and fans predicted Eder Lima to shine and lift the trophy for Russia after consistent spectacular performances throughout the tournament. However, Italy had only lost once in their opening game to Slovenia 3-2 but showed their intent by destroying Azerbaijan 7-0 who had defeated Slovenia in a fantastic encounter in their previous match 7-6. Italy progressed through the tournament stages defeating Croatia in the Quarter Finals 2-1 and in another spectacle to watch Italy confirmed their place in the Final defeating Portugal who were lead by futsal genius Ricardinho and back from injury Cardinal who had an inspiring tournament.
Italy took to the court against Russia with Stefano Mammarella (goalkeeper, Marina CSA) selected twice as the best goalkeeper in the world, Saad Assis (forward, FC Barcelona) fantastic futsal player with a glittering career, team captain Gabriel Lima and a group of talented players who had proved throughout the competition that they were here to compete and win and win they did. A fantastic final as predicted was the result as Italy ran the clock down 3-1 winners when the whistle was blown.
