The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) was established by the Economic and Social Council The United Nations Office of the Special Adviser on Africa (UN-OSAA) was established on 1 May 2003 to enhance international support for Africa’s development and the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), through advocacy and analytical work. UN-OSAA assists the UN Secretary-General in improving coherence and coordination of the UN system support to Africa, and facilitates inter-governmental deliberations on Africa at the global level, particularly relating to NEPAD. The Office takes the lead in the preparation of Africa-related reports and inputs on (NEPAD), in particular, support by the United Nations system and international community, including the private sector and civil society. It initiates reports on critical issues affecting Africa and, including the related issues of peace and development. It is charged with strengthening South-South cooperation in support of the advancement of Africa. UN-OSAA is convenor of an UN inter-departmental Task Force on African Affairs to improve coherence in United Nations support to Africa. It acts as the focal point for NEPAD within the United Nations Secretariat at Headquarters. UN-OSAA is a NEPAD strategic partner.
