Indonesia’s view was not solely based on the location of these features as Australian outposts. It was also based on the fact that the outposts are not permanently occupied. Of course, the outposts which had the major effect on any line of equidistance are Ashmore Island, and Seringpatam and Scott reefs.
In the final result all the Australian islands lay south of the boundary, with Ashmore and Cartier surrounded by 12 n.m. arcs in a fashion reminiscent of the British Channel Islands.
