The economic costs of limited health literacy
The World Health Organisation reported that there is a case to be made for viewing inadequate or problematic health literacy – as defined by the EU-HLS – as “a key determinant of health, a high-prevalence problem, a drain on human and financial resources and an obstacle to development”.29 The existing research literature on health literacy research in England and Europe however, does not address the issue of costs or include good economic evaluations.
