Sunscreen use is essential to combat skin damage, and therefore,
numerous studies are being conducted, aimed at developing new
formulations that are safe and efficacious. Additionally, scientists
are exploring natural compounds of plant origin that are capable
of absorbing UV radiation and possess photoprotective activity.
Polyphenols, especially flavonoids, have been widely explored for
radiation absorptive properties. Furthermore, carotenoids are currently
being analysed for potential antioxidant activity. Studies on
ac!a!ı and the combination of H. arenarium, C. monogyna and S. nigra
demonstrated one of the highest SPF values. However,
although numerous studies have demonstrated that the use of
these plant compounds improved the SPF values and efficacy of
commercial UV filters, the research into and discovery of new sunscreens
that contain plant compounds, which can protect the skin
effectively, according to ANVISA and FDA guidelines, is still necessary
