In light-exposed fruits of Navelina orange, Clementine mandarin and Star Ruby grapefruit, AsA levels in the flavedo were similar, ranging from 150 to 250 mg/100 g FW, while in Satsuma Owari were lower (90–130 mg/g FW; Figs. 2 and 5). Moreover, it is interesting the fact that each of the four species considered displayed a different pattern of AsA accumulation in the flavedo during ripening (Fig. 2). AsA content was also high in the flavedo of immature grapefruits and declined after October. However, in the flavedo of the specie with lower AsA content (Satsuma mandarin), it was maintained or slightly increased during ripening (Fig. 5). These results are in agreement with previous data in which important differences in AsA accumulation among Citrus species have been described, suggesting that differential and specific mechanisms may operate in the regulation of AsA concentration for each genotype [8,9].
