For many of Malta’s mass tourism resorts (as elsewhere) these
issues are pressing and the economic outcomes of transition have
created many serious challenges. The high visibility of many of the
emanating problems, such as deteriorating urban infrastructure
and unattractive aesthetics, inevitably generates many questions
about why and how they have evolved. In resorts such as Bugibba
the urban fabric itself triggers curiosity and encourages deeper
exploration. Yet, whilst these changes are readily observable,
apparently straightforward in causality and attempted remedia-tion, there has been, to date, little academic research on recent
transition in Bugibba itself, although prior research has been
undertaken on the issues associated with resort transition in other
second generation seaside resorts in the Mediterranean
